Most people who have their own business are aware of what PR is and the majority of these people understand that it can benefit their company in some way. However, for people who have not researched the topic or had it carried out, it can be a confusing and complicated procedure to fully understand.
For example, the dictionary definition or public relations states that it is the promoting of goodwill been a company and its customers, employees and other affected parties. In essence, this sounds like something that is relatively straightforward to carry out and maintain for any business. Unfortunately, as with a lot of things in business, carrying out PR is not as easy as would be first expected.
If the term public relations was to be broken down into one that could be understood and related to by everyone, it could be described as making sure that there was a good relationship between the company and their customers. Again, whilst this may sound easy and could simply consist of smiling at the right times and making sure shouting does not happen on the shop floor, it is a lot of more difficult and complex than this, which is the reason why there are so many dedicated PR companies available.
Most large organizations hire a PR company, or have their own team of dedicated PR specialists to carry out public relations on a continual basis and ensure that their company-customer relationship is as best as it can be. As these specialists are heavily experienced in their roles, the companies who they work for often see a high satisfaction from their customers and therefore as the customer is the key to the success of any company, it is strongly advised, where possible, to seek the assistance of a professional in public relations.
Whilst there are several companies who offer a general PR service, there are a considerable amount who offer a more tailored service. For instance, although it would be beneficial to implement basic PR techniques for a high street shop, the company would often see greater results if they hired a specialist in retail PR. Whilst the general techniques would be the same as any other type of public relations, the knowledge that a specialist in retail PR possesses can ensure that the most tailored and industry specific PR campaign is carried out, therefore providing results which are highly targeted and more likely to result in a sale (or other similar goal).
If you are a small company, you may not believe that you can afford to hire a public relations company or have the time to carry out extensive research on the topic. However, if you can spare a few minutes each day to being to understand the benefits of PR by researching it yourself, or to arrange a consultation with a PR company (which can be extremely affordable if you shop around), you will be able to implement your new found knowledge and will hopefully soon begin to see and increase in your business.
